    • A quick Sergio Romo story..

Not sure if this was shown on tv or posted, but during today's game I was sitting next to the bullpen. Sergio got a ball and had all the pen sign it. Then in between innings, he went to right field and motioned to a dodger fan. The fan stood and then picked up his handicapped son and carried him down to the baseline.

He gave the kid the ball and then took pics together. They all then said a prayer. After, he went back to the pen and cried to himself the rest of the inning.

Dude is an amazing guy!

I work w/ a few guys that hang w/ Romo. Don't ask for a autograph, I haven't got one in 2 yrs either. They say he's a hella cool guy very down to earth. If this story is half true, he's more of a man than 2/3 the population.

Thanks for relaying the story. He is definitely one of my favorites. I love his weekly show on KNBR and he is the only Giant I follow on twitter. He comes across as a genuine, humble family man. A great role model.

Update:

The kid is fighting cancer, not handicapped. But not in the condition to walk.

This is a great story. We need to make sure those outside this board get word of this. Not only does this combat the whole spoiled athelete stigma but transcends a historic rivalry and brings it down to a human story. Post this on your facebook or what ever if you have it.

What an awesome story. Thank you for sharing it with us. I am guessing this gets picked up. But if not, they all know the story. Character is not about what happens when the camera is on, but off.

ocblue is just a bitter old shut-in queen who has a general hate for life.

Between he, billynono, muttts and the trailer trash fridagates that board is a cesspool.

Nice story. Is Romo from the Imperial Valley? I always thought he was from So Cal, but then thought maybe it was the Central Valley because he is such a huge 49ers fan.

" If this story is half true, he's more of a man than 2/3 the population. "

I would say 99% of the population. I can hear how deep and emotional he is during an interview. He's someone who you'd want to just chill out with all day and just laugh at things.

Stuff like this happens more often than some us might think. Back in 2000 I was at the Old Yankee Stadium for a game where they were hosting the Redsox. Some Yankee Players were signing autographs before the game. There was a group of kids wearing Sox attire and being ignored by the Yankee players. Paul O'Neill came out of the dugout went over and started signing stuff for the Sox fans. After O'Neil had gone over, MO followed the lead and signed some autographs. They were the only two Yankees who signed autographs for the Sox fans (Kids). Every club has their Jerks and Cool guys. If anybody followed Paul O'Neill's career, he was known for stuff like this. Stuff like this doesn't get much attention but it does happen.
