from espn:

"Carlos Delgado's free agency could last long into the winter, much like that of Bobby Abreu last year, unless the Mets plan on bringing the veteran first baseman back to New York -- something MLB.com's Marty Noble doesn't see happening.

The Mets appear set on Daniel Murphy manning the position, Noble writes, which would put Delgado on the market.

Clubs that may show interest in Delgado include San Francisco, Seattle, or even the Boston Red Sox or New York Yankees. One sticking point may ultimately be about whether Delgado can hold down first base or if he'd be willing to serve in a DH role, which gives him more options."

This is interesting to me because this is oneo f the only Left-Handed Power bats on the market. Yes, Delgado is older and coming off of an injury, but he could be a steal in Free Agency. I doubt he gets more than a 1 or 2 year deal. The comparison to Abreu's situation in Free Agency last year might be a good sign for the Giants if they are looking at a possible upgrade at 1B.

How much would Delgado be worth? I think a 1 year deal in the 6-7 million dollar range, or possibly a 1 year deal for 6 million and a second year option for 10-12 million all depending on plate apperances.

As long as he is not the "main" power bat they go after this offseason, obviously referring to Jason Bay and others, I would think a 1 or 2 year deal for Delgado would be great. He hits well at AT&T and had an OBP of .390+ last year before injury. Definitely an upgrade over anything we have at 1st base.

EDIT: And look at his career numbers with home runs, rarely ever hit below 30 homers, even at AT&T park I think Delgado will provide plenty of dingers.

that was my thought. I wouldn't mind it if he was the #2 Power bat for this line-up. Maybe having Delgado on board would make Bay want to be here even more. If our 2-3-4-5 was Sanchez, Sandoval, Bay, Delgado...we couldn't have too much to complain about. Through a full season, that would be a MONSTER UPGRADE to what we have seen for the last 5 years. This would put less pressure of Schierholtz, Posey, Velez, Rowand, Renteria, etc. This would be an everyday line-up that could thrive off of eachother.

He's the one exception for "veteran presence" that I will stand by. Guy can flat out hit, complete impact hitter, and think of how many splash hits he could get. I too was thinking that 2-3-4-5 would be so f'n good. And you know what? If they added those 2 bats, I wouldn't mind Molina coming back to hit 6th. But only if those two moves happen. I still prefer Posey though.

Wow for once we agree Delgado would be a great pick up at a 1 or 2 year deal he has good power which is good because I will not believe that bay is a giants tell I see it or any other legitimate power bat for that matter. He has been injury plagued the last few seasons this is a bother but I say the risk could be very rewarding to us, I say go get em neukom.

Yes I like the thought of having Delgado, but we should definitely keep Garko to fill in, and I'm not sure Ryan will be very happy about that. Delgado will not be able play everyday and keep healthy... well very unlikely.
Or perhaps pick up delgado and go for a risk by having Ishi as your back up and use Garko as a trading commodity?? But lets get another bat with Delgado!

Look at his Day/Night splits. He has trouble in cold weather and has bad eye sight... I don't see him as a good fit at this point in his career.

i would keep Garko on as a back up 1Bman, Reserve LF and Power bat off of the bench. Delgado would need rest and Garko would be a good RH counter part to the Left Handed Delgado. Ishikawa would become despensible.

Delgado would have been a good pickup 5 years ago.

ya, he would have, but he could be a good value signing now.

i am not saying he can solve all the offensive problems now, but if he could hit 25 HRs, that would be a HUGE improvement from what we have been getting out of 1B for the last few forevers....

Only if it's 1 year for around 5 million. He's better than anything we have now.

"Only if it's 1 year for around 5 million. He's better than anything we have now. "

i think that is kind of a funny statement. If he is better than anything else we have, then he might be worth more than 5 million per season. I think that if we were to offer a one year deal for 5 million he would not even think about it. I bet there are 15-20 other teams that would offer that, why would he want to come here? If we gave him the opportunity to have another big pay day, then he would strongly consider it.

I think 1 year 8 million, with a second year option worth around 12 million if he has 600 Plate Apperances or 145 games played. Look at his stats when he does either of those. He would be well worth the 12 million in 2011. WE HAVE NO ANSWER FOR 1B UNLESS WE MOVE PABLO. There are very few 3B options out there that will give us power that will allow us to move Pablo to 1B.

I really think this guy has to be a traget for us. We need some depth in the line-up for a MAJOR IMPACT BAT to consider coming to SF.

Look at it this way, if you were an Offensive FREE AGENT, what would be appealing for you to come to SF? The Pitching Staff will only be worth so much. The Park is large in a division of large parks, the line-up is one of the worst in baseball and you would be asked to take the load on your shoulders and to be the "savior"...sound interesting to you?

We need to be that second chance type team for a player or two and then use them as selling points for a Big Bat. Use the Media Spin that we can. If we approached Bay with "hey, we have a solid 35 HR threat in Delgado, an All-Star in the making in Sandoval, a former Batting Champ in Sanchez, a solid defensive team and oh ya, one of the best pitching staffs in baseball. We feel you are the last piece to win this very winnable NL West and with this rotation who knows what we can do in the playoffs"

Hey rebuild,

Didn't he have hip surgery? If so, I consider that a major type of surgery and can't see any kind of optimistic "assurances" that we'll get his typical power in his first year back (especially considering his age).

I recall the way the swung with all of that torque generated from the rotation of his hips. Definitely a gamble if he's paid much over $5M, if this is the case, IMO.

Hey All,

Carlos Delgado reminds me a lot of Moises Alou, in terms of what they COULD bring to the club. His skills are still there, and as long as he stays healthy and motivated, he could be one of those lightning in a bottle signings...for 1 or 2 seasons.

However, Delgado has a reputation as a slow starter, and is coming off a year where he suffered a significant injury.

IMO, the problem with taking a flier on Delgado, even with an incentive-laden contract, is that the Giants would have to move at least one of Ishikawa or Garko to make him fit...probably Ishikawa, the other LH bat in the equation. If Delgado doesn't pan out, or goes down to injury, the next internal option as a back-up to Garko, is Brett Pill, or using Bowker as the back-up 1B.

Perhaps that's why Bam-Bam has Brett Pill in his initial instruction group.

I think Delgado is too risky to have as our major acquisition of the summer... and Im thinking if we got him that is exactly what it would be for our management. Lets at least wait out Delgado for as long as we can... Id rather have Garko and a sure bat in the OF than Delgado and Lewis/Roawand/Nate

That statement really struck me.

For $5M....we could get someone that's better than anything else that we have now.

Is that sad, or WHAT?

you are 100% correct. if delgado was our "prize" from free agency or the off-season, then we are in for a long trip. i think he would be a great secondary option. Maybe hit 5th in our line-up? we still need help at the corner OF positions and if there was any way possibly to get rid of Rowand, we could use an upgrade in CF.

Put it this way, I would much rather take my chances with Carlos Delgado than resign Bengie Molina. Molina would probably get just as much, if not more than Delgado.

So that means:

Buster Posey + Carlos Delgado > Bengie Molina + Travis Ishikawa/Garko

I have to put an end to this speculation, it's making me miserable. One of the reasons I was glad to see Franchez signed was so I didn't have to read people here daydreaming about Dan Uggla.

From:

The 28-year-old Garko is expected to be in uniform for the Giants on Tuesday — and general manager Brian Sabean hopes to keep him around beyond this season. Garko, who played at Stanford and is in his fifth major league season and third full campaign, will be eligible for arbitration for the first time.

Garko will get most of the at-bats and playing time at first base, with Travis Ishikawa assuming a more limited role.

"Professional hitter, really punishes left-handed pitching," Sabean said. "It complements what we're trying to do to develop Ishikawa. The timing was right. He can drive in a run. He can hit a three-run homer. ... The pitcher we gave up is probably going to pitch in the big leagues. I think it was good for both clubs."

-------

So obviously Sabean's plan was for Garko to be here this season, along with Ishi. That's the plan, same as how Sabean said he wanted Franchez back (and got him), these were seen as long term solutions. I guess we'll know for sure during arbitration time, when they will likely offer to Garko.

By the way, no other team is interested in Travis Ishikawa, please stop mentioning trading him!!!
