    • OT: Official MAD MEN discussion thread....
  • To:All

Ms. Bookworm initially suggested and Croix seconded the motion that someone (translated: me)
start a OT thread regarding the AMC emmy award winning drama about ad executives in early
sixties Manhattan...Mad Men....

A smart sexy period piece that's actually written within the paramaters of the actual time it
portrays... It is not spoiled by the politically correct rear view mirror perspective of the last 40
years....

So if you're thinking about having an affair with your secretary or an afternoon tryst with that door
to door air conditioning salesman, it's OK.....This is the Atomic Age after all and it's stressfull
knowing that the Ruskies have their finger on the button ready to blow us all into oblivion....

So loosen your tie or girdle, pour yourself a scotch or some gin...light a cigarette and cozy up to
the color TV while you settle in on the plastic couch covers and relive a bygone era....A time when
Walter Cronkite was the news and the word Hilton enlisted visions of four star lodging and not some
diseased fire crotched skank.....

So ladies I hope that this thread meets with the afformentioned parameters that were set forth....As I
sit here typing this in my favorite yellow corduroy shorts within the warmth of my dutch oven I realize
I'm just doing as asked....After all..."A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do"....

All right...as per request, I present the Official Mad Men discussion thread.....

If you really want to relive the early sixties, turn off the color on your color TV!

havent watched this weeks epi yet...so please, try not to give out any spoilers

the thing that makes this show great is not just the acting, scripts or the hot women, its weiner's attention to the small details

like when betty gave birth and don and the kids visited by waving up to the window (i remember when my mother gave birth to my bro and we didnt get to see her or the baby till they came home)

***SPOILER ALERT***

"DD getting it on with the kid's teacher...."

Who didn't see that coming?...Just Don being Don...Pretty hot though!
Not sure if it's wise for Mr. Draper to be krapping where he eats... She lives in the same 'hood and
teaches his girl!...Who by the way is a fat snotty little brat....Definitly takes after her mom!

"Betty being a PT to the governor's aide..."

Betty is soooo dam'n annoying!...ROLF when they pulled the old switch-a-roo and that lady showed
up for her "fund raiser"....She was acting like Sally!

"Sal getting fired because he said NO to a client...and have to explain why..."

Too bad for Sal...Don probably would have had his back if he hadn't saw what he saw, and now
knows what he knows.... Harry totally mismanaged that situation....What a spineless dweeb!
Should've kept Sal out of that meeting room....Looks like Sal will find comfort with a "take out
Chinese" down at the truck stop!....lol!

Boy Paris' great grand daddy is turning into a high maintence royal pain in the hind quarters....

And what's up with Roger??...He has turned into quite the P-Rick!

I want my Joan back!!!

Sorry I didn't reply to you sooner...I've just been a little busy and am currently running
on 5 hours sleep this week! d;^)>

Just Jokes....I was just being a bit of a Roger there!....lol!

"the thing that makes this show great is not just the acting, scripts or the hot women, its weiner's attention to the small details"

Exactly!...There's a scene from last season where the Draper's are having a picinic out in the
country....As they're getting ready to leave and Betty's cleaning up Don finishes his beer and
without giving it a second thought just casually tosses it into the woods....

That definitely was meant to take place before the PSA's with the crying indian!

Another scene from season one was one where Betty heard the kids making a rukus when they're
playing and calls them over....they come into the room and one of the kids is draped head to toe
in a clear plastic bag....Betty's shocked. eyes wide then scolds Sally..."If that dry cleaning bag
came off one of my new dresses someones gonna get a whippin'!.....Classic!...LOL!

Well we're gonna have to wait a little longer....Ep 311 is next week.....This weeks episode was
#310 " The Color Blue".....My bad!

I forgot that the show had already aired on the east coast....So when I checked the episode guide
they were already featuring next weeks episode on their website!

The good news of course is that there's still 3 episodes left this season as opposed to two!

noticed that...

quite the tale leading up to what I'm sure will be a big season-ending cliffhanger!

Bacci...pay attention...SPOILER ALERT!!!

Og...did you catch Paul's little "antic in his pantic" in his office???? and the suspense of whether Peggy or the secretary was going to find out about his dirty little secret....LOL...that cracked me up! I believe every episode has a little something that is shocking...

Do you mean his slack wack, Hagar handjob of his Docker cocker??

No...sorry I missed that....But I'll bet you a buffalo nickel that it didn't escape Achille's knowledge!
I'll bet that Achille's is the keeper of ALL the Sterling/Cooper secrets...lol!

I thought it was amusing when after passing out, Paul awoke mortified when he lost his moment
of inspiration for not writing it down...Only to have Don sympathetically dismissing his faupaux
with an understanding "I hate when that happens"...Spoken like a true creative!....Then Peggy
yet again steals his thunder....The subtle brilliance of the writing is amazing!

It helped that Don is a little less on edge lately....hmmm I wonder why!....Don is a big restless
tom cat!

And speaking of drawers...How about Betty finally finding Don's desk key??? The secret of
Don's duality is out of the bag now!

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I can see this playing into next season....

That is one of the things that is truely maddeningly(no pun intended) great about this show....A
major plot point bomb can go off hiroshima style and not get dealt with til it's gone and forgotten
much later...Very true to life....

And since I mentioned buffalo nickels...I'll bet you yet another that it was the Gov's aid that's been
making the hang up calls to the Draper residence.... That guys is major game playing head f*#k...
He has a very dark side to him that has only peeked out in small bits so far...Remember after all
his arrival on the scene was his creepily feeling up a pregnant Betty!

DiD you see next weeks preview??...Is my shoulda oughta girl friend Joan making a splash back into
the Sterling/Cooper fold???....I sure hope so!

PS - I saw John Hamm on Conan the other night...I was not aware that he is a HUGE baseball fan...
He's a Cardinal fan from St Louis.... He seems like a pretty down to earth guy with a dry sense of
humor... I'd gladly have a burbon with the guy!

uhh yeah...that. The subtle suspense around that "incident" kept you wondering if someone was going to find out his secret....Peggy walking by the door, the secretary looking for a paper and perhaps coming across something else...

It is interesting how Betty wanted to confront Don about his double life and then backed off. She is going to stew about for awhile and then it will come out in some inopportune time...seems like it is leading up into a big cliffhanger!

Show is just not the same without Joan...she has to come back!!!

And, why do I think that the new buyers are going to have Duck involved...

hmmmmmmm....

I've seen Jon Hamm on some other shows...he is a cool guy.

"And, why do I think that the new buyers are going to have Duck involved...

hmmmmmmm...."

A-ha!....Very interesting potential plot point I hadn't considered!...I mean why else do the writers
have his character lurking around, covertly popping in and out of the Sterling Cooper scene?

The man does have an axe to grind and has proven himself emotionaly and otherwise unstable
about his proffessional as well as personal life....

hmmm...What could this mean for Peggy since her and Duck bumped uglies??? Could Peggy be
poised to jump another step amoung the Madison Avenue power elite??

Interesting!....One of the major subplots throughout the series has been Peggy's rise from the
obscurity of the secretarial pool to copy writer to up and coming junior executive. Peggy seems
to always be in the right place at the right time....Or at least ends up in the right place after the
wrong move....Could the Board room be that far away?...lol!

Peggy is very much a modern woman for her day... This is the 60's after all!....She is definetly
bucking the trends...amoung other things!....Baum chika baum bomp!

[" the secretary looking for a paper and perhaps coming across something else..."]

Would that be a tissue paper? d;^)>

"Episode 311: The Gypsy and the Hobo"

Just watched it (I'm on the East coast). You won't be disappointed! And the title is explained in the last five minutes...and beautifully put in the last line. Good stuff!
