Akinori Iwamura-2B-Rays Nov. 3 - 1:28 pm et

Mark Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times reports that the Rays "are on the verge of completing a trade" of Akinori Iwamura.

There was speculation earlier this week that the Dodgers and Cubs were interested in Iwamura, but Topkin writes that neither of those teams would be the destination. Tampa Bay holds a $4.85 million option or $550,000 buyout on Iwamura for 2010.

Do you think the Cardinals would have any interest?

I don't see why the Cards would have any interest.
Skips numbers are just as good or better and although Iwamura can also play 3b there is no way they can afford to have 4 no power light bats like Skip, Yadi , Ryan and Iwamura in the same line up .

we need some clutch in our lineup..we had a beast of a lineup with dero and holliday and still couldnt produce...no one gets on base ever...and if they do the rest of the team doesnt produce...id like to see some fresh faces in the cards uniform next year..so i wouldnt be opposed to the deal, but i dont think its us..

He has good splits against LHP, though. .305 career hitter.

Like you, I'm a bit skeptical on this working. Unless the Cards plan to make a huge offer to Bay, and rely on your power from Pujols, Ludwick, Bay, and Rasmus... with Skip and Iwamura at the top.

Here is an interesting name to throw out there, Delmon Young of the twins. Its rumered that the twins won't tender him a contract, so I think he would be a cheap pick up in left. He has had a couple bad years in Min. but he has a huge upside and is only 25 I think. I think they should resign Derosa to play 2nd and maybe package a deal with Schu to get a good 4th or 5th starter.

I mentioned him in a thread a while back. I think it could work for a few reasons:

1). The Cards are not going to break the bank this off season. (Holliday wont resign and they are not going to commit a lot of money to anyone else)

2). He can play 3B and 2B. He has a good OBP and decent average. Does not commit a lot of errors on defense at 3B.

3). He is affordable.

2B Skip
3B Iwamura
1B Pujols
RF Ludwick
LF????
CF Rasmus
SS Ryan
C Molina

If DeRosa resigns he could play LF or a FA, or maybe someone from within.

It has been rumored now that the Twins are getting him for a reliever.

I guess it is not the Twins now. It is now being rumored to a NL team but not the Cubs or Dodgers and the trade should be completed by tonight.

It makes since for them and it doesn't at the same time. They need a 2nd/3rd baseman but they wouldn't agree to contract extention with Sanchez for about same amount of money that he offered the Pirates. I know it is one year for Iwamura and couple for Sanchez but I would think Sanchez would have been a better option before they traded him during the season.

And thats why the Pirates are where they are , or one of the reasons atleast.
Maybe they want to tap into the Japanese fan base so they can atleast fill 1/3 of the seats for games.
What you said is exactly what I thought when I heard the Pirates, from what I remember Sanchez wanted to stay there, so it wasn't like it was a player wanting out.
I'd take Sanchez over him any day.

I don't see why the Cards would have interest in him. I don't see them moving Skip away from 2nd and with Lugo on the roster taking up the super utility role that doesn't leave much room for Iwamura other than 3rd. I don't see that happening because leaves a lot to be desired from an offensive production standpoint.
