    • A's Fan wants Yankees to win...

I know I know, its blasphemous. Before i get jumped on for my idea hear this thought out. I want the Yankees to win. If they win it just MAY just MAY bring about a new look at the whole inequality in payrolls in baseball. For christs sake, they spent over FOUR TIMES as much money on their team this year than the A's. They went out and signed players to contract totaling almost HALF A BILLION dollars in the offseason ($441 million in commitments to be exact)! HOW are teams like the A's supposed to compete, realistically with that?

If the Yankees win maybe it will bring about some CHANGE to the way MLB teams are put together. Maybe people will get fed up with the same teams in the mix every October and will DEMAND that a salary cap (A REAL ONE) be put in place to create some parity. Just my two cents. - GotGreen - A's fan since 1987.

You've gotta be kidding, right? You actually think that any reasonable person would say "gee NYY won with a half-billion dollar payroll, maybe it's time we imposed a salary cap"? You really think that? I don't. It'll just incentivize (sp)? the larger market teams to go on even more of a spending spree than they already do.

Philadelphia has a payroll of $113,000,000.00, not exactly peanuts and way out of the A's league also. I hear you, and so do other posters, but the players union, large market teams, will never agree to a salary cap. Why should they, the way it stands now MLB is raking in the $$$$$$, cable, merchandise, etc., and so are the players. Even some small market teams have owners who do not care, they receive their revenue sharing each year, in the case of the A's it was $30,000,000 this year, with no strings on how to spend it and no accountability. Does anyone believe Fisher will use the money to improve the team? Just look at the two pitchers in last nights game, Lee and Sabathia, both Cy Young winners, both formerly Cleveland Indians, lost to large market teams. To emphasize your point, one can only guess how the Cleveland fans feel about it.
Watch Joe Mauer, the catcher from Minnesota, this is his last year under club control, after this season he is a free agent. The bidding will be astronomical, unless he takes a gigantic homer discount to stay with the Twins. To be fair, it is a two way street. When Santana left the Twins he complained about how tight they are and need to spend $$$$$$$. But their owner is really cheap. Why should a player stay for less money without a realistic chance of winning the WS when the owners don't care?
It's a bad situation and the fans of small market teams are the real losers.
Thanks for posting that.

its only a thought, plus baseball is starting to be seen as a joke by many a people. It PAINS me a great deal to say it, but its true. Whats the point in watching when only the teams with quarter billion dollar payrolls have a shot?

Actually, the last few years' WS winners have been small/smaller market teams (TB comes to mind). Yah, Philly's not shy when it comes to spending money, but more often than not, the real big spenders make it impossible for smaller market teams to only compete. At this rate, the smaller market teams will be squeezed out and there won't be anything left but large market teams. "Free" markets tend to work that way (I use the term loosely). Without a salary cap, baseball will gorge itself into oblivion.

But not before we win one more WS trophy and show those little twerps across the bay how it's done.

NEVER!

MLB and the players union will never put a cap on the spending.

I understand your point. MLB has gotten a free pass for many years because the Yankees haven't won a World Series since 2000. It would probably take 3-4 championships in a row by the Yankees for any serious talk about a hard salary cap. What is to prevent the Yankees from signing guys like Matt Holliday and John Lackey this offseason? Nothing.

But the Halos dropped $10 mill this yr on a dude who gave them 4 hrs. So the Yanks aren't only tools in this whole mix.

"What is to prevent the Yankees from signing guys like Matt Holliday and John Lackey this offseason? Nothing."

Absolutely correct, especially since Matsui @$13 mil and Damon @$13 mil both are in the final year of their contracts which frees up $26 mil per year for George to spend, odds are one if not both will be in pinstripes next year. Holliday could be really expensive, with the Halo's looking to replace Vlad and Boston not certain if they can re-sign Bay, but if George really wants him it should not be a problem.

Obviously, their should be a cap although, can you say the Yankees have the greatest team or one of the all-time ever assembled? Probably, but you might as well put an asterisk on it, saying,"Largest team salary cap in history too". Doesn't take a brain scientist or analyst to see that if you have an unlimited amount of money your going to win two championships in ten years. Probably should have been more but it doesn't take brains to win championships just money to buy the best in baseball. Good thing they don't have Billy Beane as a consultant of the team operations.......they might have five more championships in ten years...lol
Hey, all you Yankees fans, sure it's disappointing coming from a small market team. I don't like Jeter, but I admit he's proven to be a big time gamer.....Congrats!

wow i posted something like this before the playoffs started but nobody really took me seriously. i feel exactly how you feel. every year, other than the A's, i root for the yankees to win the world series for reasons you just mentioned. i don't care if they win 10 straight world series, whatever it takes for fans to finally say i'd had enough and just stop buying tickets until baseball gets its act together. Once a salary cap is in place, then the yankees 27* world series won't mean squat.
