Very very true. Only reason to keep those two would be to make a run and the Stros arent doing that unless they go big in free agency which they're not. Time to give the "prospects" like Manzella a shot. Guys like Manzella wont be prospects forever, eventually you've gotta perform. Give him and a few others a shot.

A Valverde resigning would be good only if we plan to sign several more key guys and make a REAL run at competing; this would mean a good 3B (Figgins, DeRosa etc) and a new 2B (Lopez, Hudson etc.) We would also need a minimum of one solid starting pitcher, such as Randy Wolf, Jason Marquis or Andy Pettitte. Without those in place, it would be much better to resign the cheaper Hawkins and make him the closer.

You know, it must have taken a lot guts for you to mention the idea. I don't think anyone else would have the audacity to mention not resigning Valverde or Tejada. I am too amazed by the lack of responses. This is really ground breaking stuff. Keep posting what really needs to happen, and put a stop to the charades. No sense making these Tejada trades and resigning Tejada/ Val if we won't go all the way and sign other legit players to compliment them instead of money saving retread options. I do give Drayton pass being the recession and likely depression we were facing, but It is not like we need a whole lot...a good pitcher and 3rd baseman and that is if Oswalt is ok. If Oswalt is not ok and we won't spend the money to replace him then don't resign Tejada/Val because just them alone won't make the playoffs.
That is my take on the whole thing.

You know I've said all along that Tejeda is too expensive for us to take a chance on offering him a MINIMUM of 12M under the MLBPA Master Agreement under Arbitration. He CANNOT be offered less than 80% of his previous years salary by the club offering him arbitration. Tejeda is worth far less and I have no problem with not offering him arbitration and then offering him what he is really worth. If they offer him arbitration, he'll jump on that in a New York second.

I agree they would be idiots, wait they probably will. Even the US Govt. shakes their head on Drayton's payroll decisions.
