    • Difference in Team Chemistry

I don't think it's only me; I see a huge difference in team chemistry between what goes on in the Angels' dugout as compared to what goes on in the Yankees' dugout.

I was just saying this to my husband. When I'd watch our team in the dugout during games, especially after a base hit of any type, or a run scoring, the players would truly be happy for each other, with the high-fives and the silly little dances, the talking in the dugout, the teasing and the fun the players were having.

Watching the Yankees in their dugout, I see what looks like a bunch of individual players who, while high-fiving someone for his homer or RBI, then go their separate ways, and I see no teasing, fun, dancing, nothing. I see NO chemistry there.

My husband said something like, "They're a bunch of high-paid prima donnas." They appear to be there as individuals and not a team.

That's sad, whether or not they win the WS (which it looks like they're going to do).

Has anyone else noticed this lack of team chemistry with the Yankees?

I don't know why people mistake great players for "primadonnas." If you're born with talent and are very good at your job, does that automatically make you a jerk? These players make big money because of how they perform on the field. It's not because they're greedy or selfish.

Well, this team with no chemistry is about to win it ALL!! They are there to get something done...I think they are focusing on one thing and one thing only... not choking!! They have a job to do and are going to do just that, Unlike the other teams they can sing, dance, and have fun the entire off season because they actually earned something...a World Series Championship!!

I say good for them! =)

Go Angels 2010!!

In theory they should win every year.

They can buy any player they desire with no limits on how much they spend.

What's amazing is the don't win every year.

I don't know if I would say a team had no chemistry - when they just won the world series. There just more business like and expect to do well and win. Did you see when the Yanks and Phils won their divisions? It was hugging and shaking hands; they expected to win their divisions. You see how we celebrated - we looked like we just won the World Series. But to fans and management around here, a division seems to be just as good. At least we act like it.

I think you hit the nail on the head; the Yankees do their job in a more businesslike manner.

The Angels have fun in the dugout and seem to actually enjoy each other, while I just don't see that with the Yankees.

I've seen that enjoyment with other teams when the Angels have played them, but I don't see it with the Yankees.

Wouldn't you think part of playing baseball would also be to have fun?

I guess it's just in the way they all look at it.

Maybe it's just me and my tendency to be more emotional about everything, but I enjoy watching players have a good time in the dugout!

See my answer further down. It might just be that I, personally, like watching a team's players have fun with each other in the dugout.

But winning the WS doesn't actually have anything to do with what I was talking about. I meant the general enjoyment players have interacting with each other, that type of chemistry.

The Yankees mean business and they behave that way, I guess.

BTW, I stopped watching the game in the 8th inning. I wasn't rooting for the Yankees and didn't care to watch their celebration. :)

Is this a serious post? You enjoy watching a team's players have fun with each other in the dugout? LOL.... ok. Never heard that approach to the game before.

Maybe you should be watching Dancing with the Stars or something.

No thanks. I don't watch Dancing with the Stars. Ugh. :)

Yes, I'm serious.

I enjoy watching a team when its players have a good time and actually like each other.

Baseball is a little boy's sport...why not have fun?

The Angels players seem to get along great, that's all I'm saying.

While baseball is a business, there are no laws saying that you can't also enjoy yourself while playing it.

The 2002 Angels had great team chemistry. This Angels team appears to have great chemistry as well.

You don't have to feel the way I do about it. No one said you must.

This Yankees team was actually very close. During ST, Sabathia took turns taking teammates to Orlando Magic games, Burnett invited teammates to go fishing at his lakehouse, Girardi gave the team a day off and held a pool tournament, etc. The Yankees had this silly tradition this year where they passed around a toy WWE championship belt to the "player of the game" after every win. They also held kangaroo courts and threw pies at each other after every walkoff.

Besides the pies, most of the fun stuff happened inside the clubhouse. On the field, the Yankees try to act professional and not disrespect their opponents. In NY, players can get villified in the media for dancing in the dugout, unless they back it up with a win. Just ask Jose Reyes of the Mets.

I think unlike other Yankee teams in the past this one is actually improved when it comes to team chemistry. Yes i know the whole argument of team chemistry doesn't win ballgames you actually have to play blah blah but I do think its an important factor.

Anyways as I was saying I think getting Nick Swisher helped a lot because he's very loose and funny thus making the atmosphere less "office like" and more "its a kid's game let's enjoy it." Burnett helped also with his stupid pie in the face. Annoying but it is fun. Yankees have a lot of pressure and are expected to win EVERY SINGLE YEAR and I think that's why they are so serious. However I'm with you, I like seeing guys have fun and smile every now and then! It is a kid's game after all even though its a guy's job you can still have fun :D

I remember years before I thought Yankee players were a bunch of stiffs lol I still think A-rod is a bum but that's just my opinion it doesn't change the fact that he's a good player.

p.s. Cano and Melky do the handshake things a lot they're very animated lol

Okay, thanks for explaining all of that. I forgot to recheck this thread or I'd have replied to you earlier.

I had no idea about the NY attitude toward being playful in the dugout. That explains a lot!

I'm glad that at least one other poster on this board enjoys seeing playful players in the dugout. It, corny as it might sound, warms my heart to see them enjoying themselves.

I'd forgotten about the pies, though. THAT I could do without!
