The Yankees have signed Derek Lowe, reports Marc Carig of The Star-Ledger (on Twitter). New York placed CC Sabathia on the DL with elbow stiffness today, so the move figures to replenish some pitching depth.

Apparently he'll be replacing Phelps, who will start on Monday

Phelps better start or I'll be convinced the FO is insane. So far it looks that way though. A good temporary fill in.

I actually think they should leave Phelps in the pen for the rest of the season, and have him, if there is room, in the rotation next year. He is not stretched out, and in his two starts this year he was not efficient at all. Lowe, while not that good of an solution, will hopefully keep the Yanks in games. Hopefully it will only be two starts.

Time for Phelps to strut his stuff. I don't know how many pitches will be on his count, but I hope he can go at least 6.

Yeah, I think he's only stretched as far as 60.

I'd prefer Phelps going 4 innings and keeping us in the game than Lowe giving up a boatload of runs and being an automatic loss most likely.

I don't care if Phelps can only give us 4-5 innings per game. That's better than Lowe putting us so far behind in a couple innings the game is over.

I hope they use Phelps.. I notice when they have used someone new, they end up taking them out and putting Phelps in. At least Phelps has started for us a few times already.

That is the plan.....Phelps will start and Lowe will go to the pen as the long man. Chad Qualls #2.

I like Phelps a lot, but knowing how Girardi thinks it will most likely be Lowe starting. The only other real solution is to let Phelps go maybe four, and then bring Lowe in. But, doing that almost definitely leaves the Yanks with no long man for a few days. Whereas, if Lowe can pitch say six innings and allow five or less runs that will be acceptable for a few starts, and keep the pen in place.

No, it will be Phelps...

The Yankees have agreed to a deal with Derek Lowe, but it won't be finalized until Monday. He is NOT expected to start for them."

"Marc Carig ?@MarcCarig
Girardi said earlier it's unclear how many innings Phelps can give. But it seems like they'll roll with him Mon, hence need for long man"

Hopefully Hughes pitches a great game tomorrow so that the pen will be rested for Monday.
