I always thought Tonto was smarter than the Lone Ranger. At least he didn't have to go around in a mask.

Plus, whenever they were surrounded by some Native American tribe or another and the Lone Ranger would say, "Looks like we're in for it now, Tonto." Tonto would just look around and step back.

There was an old joke about that. Can't remember how it goes now, but it was along those lines.
