If the Rays are looking to add another left handed hitter Dan Johnson is still available. When healthy like everyone else he is an extremely good hitter. He can play all corner spots and has the experience DHing. Is there anyone in the league better at the plate when the preasure is on? No better prove than when the Rays where playing the White Sox and how many walks did he recieve from the Rays and the only time they pitched to him he almost took Matt Joyce's head off with the line drive he hit. The Rays could get him under 1.5 million for a one year deal and see what happens.

Dan Johnson is a permanent part of Rays' history ... and I've been a fan of his since he entered the minors. The team would have nothing to lose giving Johnson another chance during spring training.

Yeah and release him shortly after because 1 hr is not going to help the Rays...He couldn't hit his ash with a canoe paddle...He needs to play in China or Japan..And stay out of the way..

He won two games with two pinch-hit homeruns in two different years ... each of which put the Rays into the playoffs. And ... I'd give him a spring tryout before I'd invite any of those seven minor league goofballs suspended for 50 games each because of league drug violations. (Most, if not all, of those druggies will be there!)

I have notthing against a tryout but he has shown to now no significant worth to an everyday line-up..Nice power tho but we already had one Pena..

Nice power ... straight-up guy. My only point is that spring training should be better used to give more guys a chance to show their stuff ... and there's really no downside to the team doing so. (I would also prefer to see younger guys ... rather than over-the-hill or never-been retreads.)

I feel the same about the expansion to the 40-man roster; bring up the guys who have had excellent minor league seasons ... and see if they can hit major league pitching ... because that's about the only significant thing separating AAA from ML.

If Dan Johnson could continue this season from where he left off last season, he could hit 486 home runs in one season. He hit 3 dingers in the last game of last season.

EVERY year, from college through all his minor league travels ... he's been an All Big-12 All-Star, or a season and post-season All-Star, or an organization All-Star, and, often, team and/or league MVP ... and through college and the minors ... he's been a power hitting machine. Big, strong guy who can play several positions ... but on a day-to-day basis in the majors ... something happens ... he just can't hit for average ... and I personally don't think it's because of the pitching ... in the same way I don't think Pena's problem was the pitching. I believe it's something within ... something to do with a necessary minute mechanical or mental adjustment ... and if Johnson could resolve it ... I think he'd become a big name in MLB. (?)

I'd say then his problems might be he isn't or wasn't on Joes playlist..He probably could hit for a better average than Molina and Pena..

If given enough playing time, I have no doubt that Dan Johnson would hit for a better average than Pena and Molina (while being a lot more versatile) ... and I also agree ... that for whatever reason ... he wasn't ever on Maddon's playlist.

Maddon has this New Age, laid-back, open-minded, Margaritaville-type public persona ... but I think he's probably really as rockheaded as they come ... and when he makes up his mind ... for whatever reason ... he'll NEVER admit he was wrong by changing it!

I believe that hardheadedness has probably cost the Rays a few games every season he's been here. And ... I don't think there's any doubt he'll do something that proves to be a total failure this season ... but ... he'll still keep doing it ... like some compulsive headbanger who's convinced he can empty the Gulf with a spoon!
