    • Orioles' "New" First Baseman

With Manny Machado playing third, Baltimore's first base platoon (at least for now) is Wilson Betemit and Mark Reynolds. Betemit will be starting against RH pitchers and Reynolds against lefties.

This year, hitting from their best sides of the plate, those two guys' combined offensive numbers read like this:

358 plate appearances, 318 AB, 94 hits, 23 doubles, 13 homers.... .296/.369/.491.

Mark Teixeira has had 93 more plate appearances (451). He's hit 23 doubles and 22 HRs but his hitting line is .257/.337/.491 this year.

Who's better on defense, Reynemit or Teixeira? lol

Fielding: Tex > just about every ML 1B > Reynemit

:)

It should be a nice offensive platoon and the LF platoon hasn't been too bad. With Nick and Matt hitting, with Q still playing over his head, with the kid dazzling... we just need to keep that rotation going.

"Orioles' "New" First Baseman"

I would like that platoon a lot better if it were at DH with Davis at first base.

Well, yeah, Davis not at 1B is still one of the issues nobody seems to like except Buck and Dan.

I'm sure Buck Is playing his best option at first and I'm also sure that Texas wouldn't of given Davis away for a relief pitcher if they thought he was a good option at first considering they don't have a everyday first baseman....lol....

"Texas wouldn't of given Davis away for a relief pitcher if they thought he was a good option at first considering they don't have a everyday first baseman."

At the time they needed bullpen help and they got the best one in all of baseball at the time. They also had Mitch Moreland as the everyday first baseman so I don't know why your saying they didn't have one. Davis wasn't even with the Rangers he was in the PCL at the time.

Yeah i don't get it Davis should be playing 1b when Reynolds is out. I don't think Betemit cares or even wants to wear a glove if he doesn't have to.

I was careful not to mention defense or RBI in that comparison.

Teixeira has 76 RBI and "Reyemit" has 38 as a first baseman. "But, he whined, 'RBI is a team statistic' and Teixeira has had more plate appearances!"

Further, Teixeira has four errors this year and, together, Reynolds and Betemit only have 5 as first basemen. That's not bad considering that Neither Betemit nor Reynolds has any particular experience or aptitude for playing defense.

So you expect that trend to change in the near future. I admit I feel better with Reynolds at first than I did with Wiggy. Been watching his unclean magic with Philly.

Don't look now but Machado, Quintanilla and having actual outfielders in left could bring dramatic results in improving the O's D.

What a revelation that would be. If the Orioles do suddenly improve and fix some of the real nagging problems and this season becomes a story. I don't know how it could be told in just a few minutes. So many things have happened up to this point, I don't remember it all.

If Betemit and Reynolds share first base their exposure is limited. Betemit at third and Reynolds at first was a heart-stopper with every play but Reynolds has made some nice plays at first recently. Neither one of them should be allowed to play third.

The Orioles have just 49 games left in their regular season. Chris Davis or Joe Mahoney might get the odd start at 1B in September. I think we'll be okay.

Yea he was sent back Because they've seen enough in favor of Moreland knowing they didn't didn't have much in Moreland either that's why they were looking for a 1st baseman this past off season

However Moreland is playing well this year

Texas gave up on Chris Davis because they did not think he would ever come around and hit a major league curve ball. He has. Texas was always very high on his defense. Go, try to find and read every article from his time in Texas' organization, they all had him pegged as a good/great defender, many suggest gold glove caliber. I read a lot about Davis when we traded Koji for him and I don't understand why we gave up on him at first when his defense up until this year looked superior to anything that we have had a first base in decaded. But, I guess we would have made Tex a DH if we signed him too because we don't like guys that can play defense, now do we?

Yea I know about all the reports on Davis....However buck see's him everyday during Spring drills and I guess he believes Betemit and Reynold are better defenders....or maybe its something in there contracts ?????? who knows!.... :)

Reynolds used to make some nice plays at third too. I remember the good ole days and the posts about his spectacular defensive play at third base. He's the same guy you know. It's not like the Orioles went out and had a genetically altered clone of Reynolds made that is a really great defender or anything. lol

I don't know what Buck is thinking, but as long as Reynolds only makes an error that gives up 5 or more unearned runs once every couple of months and we continue to win more than we lose, I guess I'm okay with it. I gave up on wanting good defense and solid pitching last year, now all I want is wins and we seem to be getting them with the help of some of really good pitching.
