Depending on price, according to MLB traderumors http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/chase_headley/. What would you guys think about acquiring Headley? Worth the price or not? I'd say not, since I'd prefer if we put our trade efforts toward finding a starting pitcher, but Headley definitely fits well in the lineup. Acquiring both him and a starting pitcher would also be overselling IMO. As I've reiterated many times, I don't believe in mortgaging the future just to compete with one year, I want to continue to have the excitement that I have now for at least the next 4-5 years to come.

I was going to dtart a thread to mention this but since you have already done so I'll mention it hear. The padres are getting a new ownership group and could be looking for a way to increase ticket sales. Brian Matusz and Chris Tillman are both from the San Diego area. So one of those two plus a couple of minor leaguers might get him.

I don't know what we'd have to fork over for Headley. Probably a young lefty starter, a guy like Tolleson to replace Headley at 3B temporarily...and Hoes.

Would Matusz, Tolleson, Hoes do the trick? I dunno. Maybe add a reliever like Pomerantz or Villareal.

If we could acquire Headley, we should jump all over that. A package centered around Britton or Schoop would get it done. He is a great defender and a very patient hitter who isn't very expensive and whose skills are generally undervalued on the market, leading to cheaper contracts/trade packages for his value.

The reason their willing to even listen to offers is because they have a replacement available (Gyorko). But if this is worth anything: "One Padres official summed up what it would take for them to trade Headley in two words: "A lot.'' I would prefer if we do our spending, we do it on a good SP. We need one of them; 3B is a problem, but not the most immediate one.

"A package centered around Britton or Schoop"

It would probably take both and then some. I like Headly and with the free agent Market being so thin at third base this coming off season it would be nice to get the 3rd base situation resolved now. I think Headly is under team control through 2014 if I'm not mistaken which makes it even better. If it could be done without Bundy/Machado being included than I think it should be looked at.

I was thinking Matusz, Schoop and a C prospect reading the "a lot" comment.

Headley derives a lot of his value from taking walks and playing defense. He doesn't hit for average, he strikes more than average, he hits more doubles than home runs, and he doesn't steal a lot of bases. I love Headley so my perceptions may be colored, but those skills are generally underrated. Britton is a valuable piece, despite his injury, as is Schoop.

Matusz might interest them b/c he's from San Diego so that could be in our favor. Tillman is doing a nice job at Norfolk this year and seams to be maturing as a pitcher, he's also from Southern California and may be a player of interest to them. It has been reported that the Padres are looking for pitching so...

Both Matusz and Tillman are under team control for a few more years as well which would be a big plus in negotiations.

Chase Headley Drawing Trade Interest
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 5 at 3:41pm CST]
The Dodgers, Pirates, Indians, Orioles and Diamondbacks are among the teams believed to have some interest in Padres third baseman Chase Headley, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports. The Padres are open to trading Headley within the division, Heyman adds.

Headley, 28, earns $3.48MM this year and will remain under team control through 2014. The switch-hitter has a .271/.372/.421 batting line in 352 plate appearances so far in 2012. The Padres have scored fewer runs than any other MLB team this year, but top prospect Jedd Gyorko is hitting .315/.379/.532 in the upper minors and could be called upon if the Padres complete a deal involving Headley.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported this week that Headley was drawing serious interest. The 33-50 Padres figure to be sellers at the upcoming trade deadline when Headley, Carlos Quentin and others could be available.

i think an offer of Matusz, Arron Baker (1b from Pirates for D.Lee last year) and another minor league pitcher might be enough to get him. Baker is having a really good season in A ball but the O's have plenty of other options at that position. Headley is 28 and would fit in well with the rest of the Orioles in the 25-30 age range. He is a much better option than any of the other older over the hill veterans that might be available.

I would like Chase to wear an Oriole uniform before seasons end BUT when they ask for Bundy, Machado as a starting point in the discussion the discussion should end. IMO

Yup. If it could be worked out with lesser prospects I might be on board too. Headley is under team control for 2 1/2 more years at a reasonable rate. He'd be pricey but how pricey is the big question.

I absolutely agree with you on that. However, I also agree with 2.632, I think that a package that asks for less (Matusz plus Schoop and Hoes) may be worth the price. It just depends on that the Padres want. I still think starting pitching needs to be addressed though, and if it's between acquiring Headley and acquiring a starting pitcher, I'd prefer to have the pitcher.
