***Does this Maher sarcasm include the tens of thousands innocent Libyans murdered another time Obama bypassed Congress. I'd love to hear Bill's clever wit on that one.***
It includes everything. Comedic sarcasm needs only time for an effective application. How long after September 11 were people making jokes about it? JFK? The Holocaust? As the saying goes, humor is tragedy plus time. Eventually you need to laugh at even the most serious subjects. And Maher is a humorist; he performs jokes and bits, delivers monologues, and writes books of humor, like Stewart and Colbert and Dennis Miller.
***While we may differ on the existence of a creator, that's not the point. The Constitution states our rights are provided by such, not the expert class that assumes that role in controlled societies.***
And in that, the Constitution is wrong. Its writers knew it would be, so they created amendments; therein lies its true genius. The point was that basic human rights are a birth right derived from common decency, not from a magical sky daddy who spoke through flaming shrubbery. The POINT, is that it is not an inviolable, ineffable, sacred document, but exactly the opposite, one that needs to be amended as human thought and knowledge progressed.
***Nobody is paying Maher that much money to offer only his own opinions. ***
Yes they are, because his opinions (and the way he delivers them) resonate with millions of people, in the same way as do Rush's, and O'Reilly's, and Hannity's. And there is money to be made in that. Isn't that the American way?
***Maher can invest his dirty money wherever he wants but it certainly doesn't surprise me that he seeks to run in monied circles.***
Dirty money? He's an entertainer not the leader of a drug cartel.
*** He's certainly not a man of the people anymore.***
When did he ever claim to want to be that??? He's not running for office, he's a freaking gag writer.
***You haven't learned anything over the years. ***
You don't have the slightest idea what I know or don't know. Stop pretending you do.
***A lot of doors have been opened for you here but you are too deeply entranced in the world created for you by those with much to gain. ***
Right, these baseball message boards are a veritable window to enlightenment and knowledge. I bask in the glow of the profound wisdom of the ages yet foolishly refuse to agree with your incisive insight into the way things "really" are.
***I don't read books, thus the irony with my screen name. ***
The irony of your screen name is that it professes some kind of deep understanding of a man who was a literary genius, and yet you admit you've never read him. That makes you a fanatical gas bag.
And as the man himself said, "One defeats a fanatic precisely by not being a fanatic oneself, but on the contrary by using one’s intelligence."
