Yeah so I said they should re-sign him if he will accept a reasonable offer,
we all know he is an injury risk or I'd give him the Crawford money,
but since he is an injury risk I think $17.5M per season is reasonable
(12.5% less than the $20M b.c of his injury history, it's still a ton of money).

There's no doubt the Mets have been a better team with Reyes in the lineup. The tightrope Mets management is going to have to walk is to find a way of signing him without completely compromising their future. Reyes' unfortunate recurring health issues complicates things. I want him back on the Mets next year but how many years are too many? How many will get it done? Four? Five? Six? More?

And what happens if they lose him? They can't JUST plug Tejada in and think everything will be fine. Reyes is their leadoff hitter, their speed merchant, their shortstop. That's three players in one.
People say, "well, they've lost with him so it doesn't matter." Yeah, they lost with him. And they'll lose even MORE without him. I've never been more anxious/ambivalent about an offseason player move as I have with the Mets and Reyes this year.

All very reasonable assertions......nobody questions whether the Mets are better with Reyes than without...the bottom line is does one think that investing 20 million a year for a long period of time on these shaky legs of his....That's the crux of the issue...we all agree that he's an exciting and terriffic player

Anyone with half a brain knows the Mets, or any team, would be better with Reyes than without him.

But ...

From 2005-2008, when the Mets had winning seasons, they also had other players who were having solid years (DW, Beltran, Delgado).

In recent years when the injury bug, age, and perplexing down years have hit, of course I'd expect the Mets to have a losing record, with or without Reyes.

A better indicator would be the Mets' record 2005-2008 without him, but unfortunately that would amount to around a dozen games which is nowhere near a good sample size.

Just because a team loses with a player does not necessarily mean that player is a significant part of the problem. Reyes injuries have hurt the team no doubt. But its the injuries as a whole that have realy been the bigger issue. Losing Reyes for 30 games has a greater impact when you have so many other key players injured. The Mets have no replacement for Reyes at this time. As you pointed out what he brings to this team as its currently constructed is just impossible to replace today..His offense, defense, lead off hitter ect..If he goes this team is headed for a long 2012.

No doubt he makes the team better when he plays except your math is off. If he is responsible for 9% more wins then he turns a 70 win team into a 76 win team not an 84 win team. The question then becomes does he turn an 84 win team into a 91 or 92 win team?
