Hey Ht,
"He just needs to avoid the obligatory brainfart inning. This is a winnable game and Blanton their version of Brad Penny."
IMO, one thing has to happen for the Giants on both sides of the ball...be aggressive in the strike zone.
When Lincecum gets in trouble is when he pitches backwards, going for early strikes with sliders and change-ups outside the zone. And when Giants batters get in trouble, it's when they hack at pitches whether they're strikes or not.
As long as Lincecum can keep the ball down, in the strike zone, with his fastball and change, he can use the slider outside the zone to convert strikeouts.
As long as Giants hitters force Blanton to throw strikes, and show aggression with pitches in their red zones, they will hit him and score runs.
Mattingly is, no doubt, telling his hitters to watch a lot of 0-0 and 1-0 pitches from Lincecum...the perfect situation to get in and steal a lot of early strikes. He's also probably telling Blanton to throw a lot of borderline pitches, to let the Giants get themselves out due to their aggression outside the strike zone.
