Well Rizzo makes his major league Cubs debut Tuesday night. Most of us won't get to
see it because the telecast is on WICU or whatever the he ll that channel is.

As a Black Sox lover, I am sure the term "fan" is unfamiliar to you- as you can barely draw 25k of these folks to the Prison Cell even when you are in first place.

A "fan" is short for fanatic. It is a person who watches just about every game, stays in touch hourly with the latest club news and buys team gear to accent their man cave. These people do exist even if the Black Sox don't have any.

A large portion of the Cubs fans live outside of Chicago. The Cubs along with the BoSox and Yankees are just about always the three largest road draws in baseball year in and year out. And that is over the course of the last quarter if not half century.

So with the reach of WGN in the 70s and 80s and the migration of families outside of Chicago, a large portion of the Cub fan base wont get to see his debut.

However, a lot of us also have the package from mlb.com to watch the game and thankfully since this isnt a Saturday Fox game, it wont be blacked out to a significant portion of the country.

Maybe if you guys try real hard, clean up the pit that is the South side and get rid of your "thug" fan base and players, you guys might someday get a quarter of the fanbase the Cubs have. Maybe.

Oh, and Nat was right. Read what the thread starter said. He said most Cubs fans won't get to see the game. I doubt "most Cub fans" live away from the city, but what I think he meant was most Cub fans who do live far away form the city won't be able to see it. Easy misunderstanding : )

The source of the problem is MLB, and not the Cubs in particular or WCIU-TV or WGN-TV. MLB limits the number of games that a super-station like WGN can carry. WGN still produces the extra games, but sends out the broadcast signal through WCIU. At least that allows Chicagoland viewers to see games that otherwise would have been blacked out.

For sixteen years I worked for WCIU-TV. Many more White Sox games than Cub games are carried on WCIU. The family that owns the station are White Sox fans. Howard Sharpiro, the recently deceased owner of WCIU, was a good friend of White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf. At the station when Jerry was introduced to me, he had a smile on his face. When the introducer indicated that I was a big Cub fan, Jerry's smile faded, his eyes sank and his hand became limp.

I wouldn't go that far. Let's just say I'm a strong proponent of keeping a level head when its comes to the nonsense that is Cubs/Sox.

Can anyone explain why having games on WCIU is such a problem? I live in Chicago so I get all of them. If a game is on WCIU is it not aired on MLB.tv or MLB Extra Innings? A good amount of "out of market" people subscribe to these so they can see Cubs games..

That was my point. I think there is a small fraction that live close to Chicago that don't get WCIU, but they are blacked out on those other options. I don't get the sense that this is a large number though.

It really does stink not being able to see his debut. I'll try searching for streams but I only know of a couple of older ones and they don't look too promising.

Perhaps if Capt (or anyone) knows of a stream...

f you pay for major league baseball package on either direct tv or cable, you get the away game which means listening to Mets Broadcasters. Also you can get on the computer if you pay for baseball package. For those who do not live in Chicago, you have to pay. That unfortunately is the way it is. Major league baseball is responsible for all of this. They control TV, also get a cut from baseball tickets sold on stub hub, etc. etc. It is all about the money.
