It's time to give Gomez a minimum of a 3 year deal and give him Centerfield everyday. His defense continues to be solid and the Brewers need to continue to be defensive minded. He has also shown more consistantency (over prior years) with his offensive production. He has 9 HR and 18 SB in only 200 at bats. If he gets 500-600 At Bats he projects to 25-30 HRs and 45 + steals. His average is near .250 (quite a bit better than Weeks who is earning over 8 million on a 4 year 38.5 million dollar deal ) and should go up if he is starting everyday. He is still a relatively cheap option (earning under 2 Million this year)and could be given an extension at a reasonable cost. Things are starting to click and he is on the verge of breaking out. Even if he doesnt, we would stil have a plus defender with speed on the bases.
Out of all the questionable deals Melvin has made this one would actually make sense.
If he started every day, his average would go down...since he is benched against pitchers he typically cannot hit.
That said, I like his defense and I wouldn't be opposed to a 3yr contract...but keep it cheap. He's no Weeks or Hart (obviously).
