Bret Myers just isn't very good. Astros can only hope he holds it together long enough so they can trade him and get some value in return. It's also a pretty sad day when the astros in-game highlight is carlos "$18 million man" Lee breaking up a rookie's no-no in the 7th inning. wow, how exciting! This team is an embarassment. Just when I thought there couldn't be a worse team in the NL, the Padres show up and prove they are. Oh, Astros split the 4-game series at home with them so not sure who is worse at this point. Why Brian Bogesigvich, Chris Johnson and Jordan Shafer are still in the majors is puzzling to me. The minor league system must really be hurting. Out.

I think it's clear that Myers likes it in Houston, and really prefers not to be traded.

Citing a reliever's ERA over a mere month's time? I'm not sure what's more shocking; that you did it or that Ghick didn't tongue-slash you for it.

Myers will be fine.

"Bret Myers just isn't very good."

92-93 MPH fastball, hammer curve, solid slider and change, good command...yeah, what a loser...

It's like Myers threw batting practice pitches. Something's not right.

Closers ERA isn't something that should be taken to seriously, but it sure as <hell shows he has been off this last month or so. I don't care how you look at it.

I think Ghick didn't bash me because in most cases relievers era doesn't mean much, I agree. In this case it was just a stat to back up how bad he has <sucked and I think most fans agree the last month has been bad for him.

I have to disagree. Think about it; 5 of those 7 ER this month were in the non-save situation Royals game, which we still won. Only one of the runs he gave up yesterday was earned; we lost due to shoddy defensive work mostly. In short, he's blown just one save this month, last night, and it wasn't even mostly his fault. Outside of that KC game that wasn't a save situation and we didn't lose anyway, he's been fine (1.93 ERA).

This is why you don't cite reliever's ERA over such a short sample; it's usually meaningless without context. Myers has come out of the bullpen 11 times during the month, and yesterday was the first time in which he cost us a win, and it wasn't all his fault even then. I'll take that in a closer any and every day. Some of the statements about him <sucking and just not being very good and melting down regularly are simply inaccurate. It happens to ever closer ever. Wagner, Lidge, Valverde, Lyon, Melancon and now Myers; it just takes one or two bad days for the ERA to balloon due to sample size and the fans to start hollering and screaming about how they couldn't pitch their way out of a paper bag.

I still disagree. I think he has been bad this month. I don't pick and choose what days to look at the stats. We can just agree to disagree. I don't think he <sucks, I just think it has been a sucky month for him.

"I don't pick and choose what days to look at the stats."

Hypothetically then, if a pitcher gave up 250 earned runs in one inning in one game on the first day of the season, and then pitched another 229 innings that year without allowing another single run all year, you'd consider that a bad year? That would be a 9.72 ERA on the year, but he'd be absolutely untouchable outside of that one game.

You might want to start a thread, based on your scenario....why not, they seem to be popular of late...

It could be worse. He could throw faster and <suck more like John Axford.

This is why I don't like ERA sometimes. It doesn't tell the entire story. He gave up 1 ER, yet 6 runs scored in the inning, with 4 of them coming off just one pitch.

Any manager that let a pitcher give up that many runs without pulling him should be hung on the spot.

Meyers has pitched like garbage lately. You don't leave him in when he's getting hit around like that and his pitches aren't moving worth a <damn. Especially when you are trying to trade him.

Exactly. I'm as critical of CJ's defense as anyone, but it's a stretch to pin 5 runs on him.

CJ should hardly be blamed for the loss yesterday, but his defense has left a lot to be desired for sure.
