Angels Interested In Acquiring Zack Greinke
By Dan Mennella [July 10 at 5:47pm CST]
The Angels plan to make a run at trading for Brewers starter Zack Greinke if the right-hander becomes available prior to the trade deadline, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.

The Orioles, Rangers and Braves are also thought to be interested in dealing for Greinke, the 2009 American League Cy Young Award winner, although a person close to Greinke said that the Halos are a "perfect fit."

The Angels lavished huge contracts on Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson this offseason, but they may have payroll flexibility for 2013 with club options on right-handers Dan Haren and Ervin Santana, the latter of which is expected to be declined barring a "major turnaround," according to Heyman.

The Brewers entered the break with a record of 40-45, eight games back in the NL Central and six back for one of two Wild Card spots. They've not yet decided whether they're sellers and will apparently use the first week or two after the All-Star break to sort that out.

Brewers cornerstone Ryan Braun, for his part, wants to convince management to retain Greinke, according to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com (via Twitter): "Realistically, we're still in this thing."

Great news! Even if they don't get him now, sounds like Greinke would be interested in joining the Angels staff in 2013.

I wonder if Miguel Gonzalez would be available? Weaver, Wilson, Greinke, Gonzalez, Richards?

Now who do you want to give up for a pitcher with ONE START?

If he's not that great, then why should we give up much of anything.

But you still want him to be a starter for the Angels.

He started ONE GAME against a team that generally doesn't do well against 1st time pitchers.

Do you get paid by post count?

I think the only thing beyond Chuckie's imagination is The Twilight Zone.

I think he would do very well for the Angels. Am I not allowed such an opinion? So what if it's one start.

I'm going to see if I can get you a job with the Yankees (rookies need not apply).

That made no sense to me. I don't even know how to reply .

Do you want me to work for the Yankees because we beat them quite often?

Should I apply for that job because I'm apparently no longer a rookie?

Time to adjust your meds Chuckie.

The organization needs pitching depth and Haren and Santana are on the edge...The Minors have 5 arms tops that could have a half decent chance of making any roster.

We need another starter for this year. We will need to buy depth for next year soon enough.

I don t know if Greinke is the guy or not. Wandy in Houston makes sense for a couple years. Inning eater.

Can't say I can give real direction on this one. Greinke scares me because of his past anxiety problems. The arm is a no brainer, but as Santana shows.... it s not everything!

Scared on Greinke...Our minors need 2 years to rebuild. We may need Greinke but that does not guarantee he will succeed.

I would suspect that Richards and maybe Segura could be part of any deal to aquire Greinke.

The Angels cannot afford to trade any pitching. They need to acquire pitching depth.

Unless Grienke agrees to a contract extension with the Angels, he should not be persued.

Charles, I'd rather the Angels got Gonzalez instead of Greinke, although I'm not that high on Gonzalez. Its just that the Brewers are going to ask a lot for a pitcher that has a history of mental problems, especially in stressful situations. That should put up a red flag IMO.

Yeah like Santana doesn't have mental problems. Or Haren has won big games. Look its all a roll of the dice when it comes to pitchers who have not won championships before and with Greinke at least you have less mileage than Harne and he is younger than Santana so there is hope for his mental issues.

Greinke keeps the ball in the park. Santana doesn't. Isn't Greinke's anxiety controlled with medication?

His recrord looks more consistent than does our boy Santana. Ervin is either unhittalbe or a complete bust. You never know what you will get when he takes the mound. He might be better off in the pen.

I hope Dipoto isn't putting all his hopes on Greinke or bust.

Hopefully he's in on talks about Jason Hammel or even someone else to give us another starting pitcher.

At least Greinke can be controlled with medication. So far nobody has figured out what ills Santana its a no brainer if I am giving a long term contract its Greinke not Santana.
