Reporters on bleacher report say that the Os and Phil's are close to a deal and possibly involves Thome. Really I don't think we need another old timer unless we get Palanco or Victorino then I'll be happy but i really doubt that.

Polanco at third and Thome a DH would make Reynolds and Betemit expendable. Even if we eat a lot of salary this I would do.

Ya me too well see after the game there should be an announcement. I just really hope the Os get rid of Hunter and Gregg like really Humter goes 1.2 innings with 5ER 8 hits just release him he's hurting our bullpen really bad leave Eveland as LR and call up Tillman and send Matuz to triple A.

I'm not seeing the improvement really by using Thome as a DH over Reynolds or Betemit. A better move would've been to improve at 3B or LF and this move is actually a step in the opposite direction.

Ya hes 41 I was hoping we would get Polanco but guess not. We need pitching not hitters and we need defensively good players not a dh who can't make errors.

I was more interested in Polanco at this point for third base.

I look at Thome as a replacment for Nick Johnson as I think the Buck has not played him (Johnson) consistantly because of the scar tissue issue and now that the issue has seen the light of day this would be an improvement.

This had better mean that nick Johnson is gone.
Now we have

Reynolds
Davis
Thome
Betimet
Johnson
Weiters ( when having a rest day)
All will be DHing at some point.

And the article I read said "Thome's a good fit for Baltimore because they need a DH"
To me that sounds stupid considering the log jam. Perhaps this is the sign of another upcoming move.

I don't think there's going to be the right move to be made with pitching and I'm not in favor of sacrificing the future for anything short term. If a move is made for a starting pitcher it needs to be for someone controllable who will help this team win for the next 4+ seasons. Presumably that trade will include Machado plus some combination of Matusz/Arrieta/Britton/Tillman and one or two high ceiling potential prospects from the lower minors. We can't let Machado go for a rental and I would want to see a contract negotiated before completing a trade for anyone not under control through 2015. I definitely don't believe that Garza is the answer though.

We gave up Kyle Simon and Gabriel Lino. I hate giving up Simon for a 41 year old, 3 month rental that might give us 7 home runs. Simon on the other hand has a 3 something ERA in F-rederick and would have probably finished the year in Bowie at the crisp age of 22.

Thomes still got a good bat, will be a DH and i know hes on the down side and at the end, but over 600 homers, should get some respect

Manny Machado will not go anywhere. If dan were to trade manny I will no longer watch the orioles. Am getting sick and tired of this darn convo we are having about trading Manny. Let it go.

Jim Thome could bring leadership to the clubhouse too hes very classy. This was a good move by dan. i know fans are sayin why are we getting old timers. But if you look at it.Dan didn`t sign Nick? Nick will probaly pull the one year and done deal that Vlad pulled last year.

"I look at Thome as a replacment for Nick Johnson as I think the Buck has not played him (Johnson) consistantly because of the scar tissue issue and now that the issue has seen the light of day this would be an improvement."

Agreed - Thome is the new NJohnson but upgraded.

Does this mean theres a platoon at 1B with Betemit and Reynolds, and a platoon at 3B with Flaherty and Andino now? And another platoon at LF with Avery and Pearce? And where does Davis play when Nick Markakis returns?

Thome is an intriguing acquisition - the team is immediately improved a little. I like it. Looking forward to what other trades may bring us in the near future.

Why in the world would we be looking at a platoon of Reynolds/Betemit at 1B when we have a perfectly competent glove (and bat) there already in Chris Davis? His career numbers show he's a good defensive 1B. One bad game this year and now he's not an option there?... but instead we consider 2 guys that are perpetually poor with the glove?

For years we've been looking for a "prototypical", big, left handed power hitting 1B. Now we may finally have him for the first time since Palmeiro left, and we're intent to use anyone but him there.

The only way this makes any rational sense whatsoever is if we're looking to deal Reynolds too, and this Thome acquisition was merely the first stage in a multi-pronged attack. And the time Mark is stealing from Davis at 1B is a (failed) attempt at increasing his value.

The only other explanation = Buck is clueless and/or has something personal against Davis. And I don't want to believe that.

Just make sure Thome bats before Reynolds. That way you can guarantee 2 ks at the bottom of the order.

21 strikeouts in 62 at bats is definitely alarming to say the least
