According to a quote from Mark Prior's USC graduation speech:

"Having a degree from USC is a major accomplishment for me, as well as it should be for you. (USC Associate) Dean Ellis alluded to the fact that I'm only one of 17 current major leaguers with a college degree."

Wow, only 17 college graduates in all of major league baseball.

Could this be accurate?

Only 17 in MLB, ouch!

How many players are there in major league baseball?

Since we baseball fans love statistics, what is the graduation percentage for MLB?

I dont know what the graduation rate of MLB players is but it has to be higher than Cincinnati's Bob Huggins program!

30 teams, 25 players on each MLB roster = 750 MLB players. If 17 are graduates, that's 2.26%.

Or, on the 40 man roster? 17/1200 = 1.42%

Yep, there's more in the minors too. In fact, the Cubs have the only MIT graduate to play in the majors in Jason Szuminski. He pitched out of the pen for the Padres, but did no good; so he went back to the Cubs farm system. He's a rocket scientist (really). Prior's comments may have alluded to players who got their degree WHILE in the majors - or perhaps he was just wrong, but we're still dealing with only around 5% of players in the majors with a degree.

OUT LOUD: Tony Womack
July 20, 2004

The little ex-Cub who's a big hit with the Cardinals talks with Steve Rosenbloom in the St. Louis clubhouse.

Sample:

I paid my way through school. I played in the minor leagues and would leave the last three weeks of the season to go back and get my degree.

I got a B.A. in sports management. My wife and I will start going to get our master's within the next year or two. She's going for business, I'm going for sports management. I ain't going to be playing this game forever. I need something to fall back on just in case we have to get jobs.

I try not to sign the sweet spot (when he autographs baseballs) because I think it's for managers and Hall-of-Famers. They deserve it and I have that respect for the game.

Baseball is like basketball in how a lot of the good players leave college early to go to the pros. It's very tough to graduate in three years as an athlete (non-athletes are averaging almost five nowadays). So there are probably a lot of players who will eventually get their degree, kind of like how Prior did.

Because it's a big party school I guess. Not that it matters, he got an online degree, so I doubt he did much partying.

Baseball has something the other major sports do not have, and that is a minor league system. Imagine how many young players would by-pass college if the NFL and NBA had a farm system in place. NFL Europe is the closest thing they have to a farm system.

University of Phoenix is not a party school, it is a privately owned acceterated pace college that has locations all over the country. I attended that school a few years ago, and it is an easy school to piggyback on other students to get good grades without learning anything as it is a group participation school. You are graded mainly as a group, not on individual achievements. They currently are accredited, but the rumor is that they may lose that distinction.

baseball actually has alot of latin players who dont know english and who dont go to college so that would lower the rate. Most probably dont graduate high school
basketball also has the CBA and the NBDL
