This past week we've had the chance to view the Cubs on ESPN, Fox, WGN, ESPN Espanol and Fox Sports Chicago.

How did the coverage differ?

What did you see on ESPN or Fox that you'd like to see WGN do?

For instance, I noticed that ESPN showed a wide shot from home plate so you could see how the fielders were playing the batter. WGN doesn't seem to show that much.

I also like ESPN's curiousity about what goes on all over the ballpark - inside and outside. We see more via ESPN than WGN.

The announcers on ESPN Espanol seem to have a lot more enthusiam in their voices than then their english speaking friends. Hey, did anyone catch the interview with Sosa after the game in spanish?

Sosa related articles, Cubs tv ratings, etc.

ESPN and Fox don't have Stoney so I would rather have WGN and FSC. I also enjoy the seventh inning stretch which the national networks don't show.

The first Yankees game on MLB-TV, we got the YES broadcast which was better than I expected but you still can't beat Stoney and the Chipper.

I like ESPN's strike zone graphic, where it shows where the ball crossed the plate

that graphic would be good if it was right. . .if you watched it, it always marked the ball where the catcher caught it, not where it crossed the plate.

Hi,

ESPN and WGN are broadcasting to two different audiences. Most Cub fans watching WGN know Wrigley inside and out so that coverage is not new to them.

ESPN treats it like the game of the week and shows stuff the local fans would be bored with. One example was that ESPN was going on and on and on about Babe Ruth. Well the chat room was going nuts because Kelton was getting his first major league at bat and they didn't even mention it. They they followed it up by calling him Helton.

The WGN camera crews have probably broadcast more games than any other crews in the history of baseball. They follow the ball very well and their replays are excellent. The network generally has more cameras and gives some different views.

What I didn't like was that Morgan and Miller thought they had to be part of the entertainment like McCarver the day before. To me the game is the entertainment and it is the job of the announcers to compliment the game, not try to overshadow it.
I really resented just how unprepared the seemed to be in certain situations as well.

regards,

Hey Darin,

I like the K Zone a whole lot too, WGN could do that and call it something else. It erases any doubt rather a pitch was a ball or strike! Do it WGN!

Did you see Prior spin after throwing that homerun pitch?

I think he knew exactly where it was going and spun around to avoid watching it.

Yeah I did, did you see that pitch to Jeter where Prior slipped and the ball sailed outside and fooled the &%"# out of Jeter? Miller was set up on the inside corner though.

The best combination would be Chip and Steve announcing, the WGN camera crew, the FSN pre and post game show, and the ESPN graphics and technology (k-zone). I also like the WGN "scoreboard" (for lack of a better word) in the upper left hand corner of the TV better than FSN's which goes along the top of the screen. Which kind did ESPN have? I was at the game, so I didn't see.

Sorry, something I forgot to mention about FOX and ESPN that I don't like is the green sign behind home plate. And also, FOX and ESPN didn't show the singing of take me out to the ballgame, I believe, which su.cks.

That was cool, I really enjoyed that angle. Aside from that and the strike zone dealie though, give me Steve Stone and WGN any day...

BOY, i miss stoney so much after FOX & ESPN. McCarver doesn't know a thing about pitching. Sat. game: Remlinger vs. Giambi (8th?) bases loaded...McCarver consistently mentioned that Rem is goin to throw outside. but all the pitches were thrown inside and the 3rd strike was an inside changeup. if that was stoney....enough said...

Joe Morgan on that play by soarino when he slipped on the 2nd base: oh blah blah, it wasn't his fault. he's not wearing any spikes blah blah; when it clearly showed he had spikes on. JUST COVERING FOR ANOTHER 2ND BASEMAN AND his mistakes when he was playin 2nd.

FOX & ESPN game was more for the whole nation. talking about history etc etc. i can only appreciate WGN goin into depth/detail of a baseball game. i didn't like the strikezone shown by ESPN. what's the point? umps call is all that matters. it only upsets me if the ump calls it incorrectly.

Hi,

Not only did ESPN not show the singing of take me out to the ball game, their commercials were not finished and we missed the first couple of pitches. They then showed it during the bottom of the seventh and we couldn't watch the game.

I prefer WGN broadcasts over the other networks. Their scoreboard is not annoying like FSN, the broadcasts seem a little bit louder, and unlike FOX and ESPN, they show the traditions like the singing of the seventh inning stretch. Listening to Chip and Steve always helps as well.

GO CUBS!!

Hi 5412,

I'm partial to WGN, but I like when Cub fans can watch throughout the country on ESPN or Fox. I like listening to Steve Stone and I can stomach Chippy. Gail Fischer does a commendable job on Fox Sports Nets Pre and post game shows. Two things bothered me, 1- the ads that were shown on ESPN and Fox on the screen behind home plate. what an ugly sight. 2- Jim Belushi plugging his series on ESPN.
Show and comment about the game on the field. WGN also does this during the Cub half of the 7th inning, when they have celebrity singers. I have to turn down the sound :(.=foss

Evening foss,

You make a good point. I enjoy both Gayle Fischer and Dave Otto in the pre and post game stuff. They add to the show.

I don't mind the interviews in the bottom half of the 7th if they are former Cubs like Glenn Beckert a week or so ago. I hate it when it is Freddy and the Zits talking about their upcoming concert tour or Hillary talking about how she grew up a Cub fan. One thing I do like is Chippy has no qualms about interrupting them to report what is going on in the filed of play. All that is sacrificed is generally the ball and strike calls.

Mighty quacks are down 2-0 in the second period. Brodeur needs the playoff money to pay off his ex wife.

Gail Fisher is alright but then they completely ruin theose shows with the most inane incompenternt arrogant pompous jerk ever foisted on Cub fans. Dave Otto is by far the worst broadcaster ever to sitr behind a microphone and now even WGN radio is beginning to show their utter disregard for cub fans by including this bablling idiot on their sports central shows on Sunday as their baseball expert labling Otto as a baseball expert has to be the biggest oxymoron ever. Fox and WGN wise up are fire theis complter jerk before you drive away any more audience.

The one thing that I don't like about FSN is about every 20 minutes, they'll shrink up the screen to add a ticker along the bottom to show the score of other games going on. But what su.cks during day games is the fact that all they show on that ticker is the time when all the other games will start that evening. Do they really need to shrink up the screen every 20 minutes just for that? Gets to be annoying.

So tell me how you really feel about Otto, Ernie. He is an Alumnus of Elk Grove High and played under Coach Mr. Larry Peddy.
I can't be that critical of a Grenadier who made it to the big show-Foss
