I just finished reading the book Banks to Sandberg to Grace: Five Decades of Love and Frustration with the Chicago Cubs  by Carrie Muskat and Bob Verdi.

The book offers a collection of stories from folks like Ryne Sandberg, Ernie Banks, Joe Giradi, Lee Smith, Larry Bowa, various Cub managers and even some GM's!

The last interview in the book is with Yosh Kawano. Yosh was nice to me when I was at Wrigley Field many years ago.

In his interview he mentions two restaurants:

Binyon's and Gibsons as favorite places of the folks he knew.

Are these Chicago area restaurants?

What are they like?

What kind of food do they serve?

Am I likely to meet a Chicago celebrity there?

Thanks!

Gibson's does steak and it's a pretty popular- there's usually a Chicago celebrity and even Hollywood celebrity spotting every now and then.  It's kinda a "see-and-be-seen" sort of place.  Good steak (although not the best steakhouse in Chicago) and huge portions.  You should see the piece of carrot cake they serve for dessert- it's HUGE!

Dear CG,  At least once per year upon my treks to Chitown I always visit the Chicago Chop House. Their spring lamp chops are always a favorite selection of mine. The food and service has always been second to none, until last years visit. The chops wre tough and overcooked and the service medicore at best. To top it off, upon notifying the management after my return home, I was completely ignored ! Has the establishment gone that far downhill or was my visit just a case of bad luck ? Are there better places to visit for hand cut steaks and mutton ? Thanks for any input you may provide. Best regards, Cle

I've eaten at the Chop House once, and my steak was terribly undercooked. To top it off, I got a raging case of diarreah when I got home. Not my best restaurant experience.

Definition of a Cubs Fan - Always thinks his team is going to win, but isn't suprised when they lose.

Definition of a White Sox Fan - Always thinks his team is going to lose, but still gets mad when they do.

I've heard that the Chop House is excellent.

I must reccomend Harry Caray's. Good steak, nice atmosphere.

I love Chicago Hot Dogs and one of the best are at  Al's Beef a block west of LaSalle and Ontario.  Paradise Pups has great charbroiled dogs on River Road in Rosemont.

I agree that Gino's East has great pizza, Due's is also pretty good plus they open late which is good after Hawk and Bulls games.

MAKING A HIT WITH THE CUBS: Q&A with Eric Karros

When the Cubs acquired ERIC KARROS from the LA Dodgers, it ended his 12-year relationship with the team. That's a long time.

His three-run game-winning homer on June 7 against the
New York Yankees helped make him a Cub.

Karros answers your e-mail questions - and was a little
embarrassed at his response to the last one.

Q: What's your favorite Greek restaurant in Chicago?
Jeff S. - Deerfield

KARROS: I haven't been to one yet. I hate to admit that.

Today's Tribune included the article "When in Chicago, where's the best meal?" which quoted various MLB players regarding their fav Chicago restaurants.

Chicago restaurants benefit from the Cub's playing day games too.

"I'm a steak guy so I like Gibson's, I like Smith & Wollensky's, The Saloon. I like them all. Ruth's Chris, I like them all. I like coming to Chicago because you actually get to go out and eat dinner at night." --Steve Kline, St. Louis Cardinals

Related quotes from the Tribune...

Do the players usually eat dinner before or after a night game? -- Luke Rothaar, Chicago

Since food is catered into the clubhouse after games, most players eat dinner after the games. Some eat so long after games that we miss our deadlines while they digest properly. I have to admit, this is a question I just didn't see coming.

Which park serves the best pre-game meal for the press and what is the most unique or interesting thing you've been served for a pre-game meal? --Ron Deuter, Round Lake Beach, Ill.

The best pre-game meals, coincidentally, are prepared by Cubs chef Robert Chamberlain, also known as the Sultan of Smoke for his delicious smoked ribs and sausages. Mmmmmmm, sausages. The worst meals come from St. Louis' Busch Stadium, which I like to call E-Coli Stadium for its peculiar smell. Most interesting thing I've been served pre-game? Probably a summons.

Eating well

The Cubs' run of injuries has benefited one group: Minor leaguers on the Iowa farm club are fattening up.

"Actually, they've been eating better than us with all the guys going down there [on rehab]," Gonzalez said. "We've been buying meals every day for them. I'm sure they don't mind.

"It's always something, as a player, you want to give back to the players who make room for you so you can work on things."

More food

Talking about good eats, the big-league Cubs had a feast after Saturday's game, thanks to hitting coach Gary Matthews, who went fishing on Lake Michigan on Wednesday.

Matthews and friends caught eight huge fish, six of which he brought to the ballpark for a gourmet preparation-in white wine and lemon sauce-by Cubs chef Robert Chamberlain.

Were they good?

"Are you kidding me?" Matthews asked. "Delicious."
