Wow!  Justice looks like the overwhelming choice for our voters so far.  I guess fans feel Jeremy is out the door.....  And that Dye will be all healed by April l.

I'll go with Justice, but only because I see Eric Byrnes landing a starting outfield spot and the leadoff position in the order.  If that doesn't happen and Justice sees most of his action as an outfielder, Jeremy is more than capable of being a big contributor at the plate.

Well, out of 58 people voting, the overwhelming response from fans voting has been that David Justice should DH this season for the A's.  Any other comments, before we close this down?

The consensus of fans in recent voting has been that Justice should be the DH for the A's in 2002.  Although I had originally supported him for an outfield position, especially with the injury to Dye, I am having second thoughts about Justice for the outfield in the light of this poll.  I saw him on "Extra" recently and he just didn't look the same.  What has happened to him?  Anyone know?

What does he look like?  I can't imagine that any appearance on Extra would shine any light on his playing ability.

I can't explain it.  You had to have seen it.

There is some stuff at www.extratv.com.  When you get that website, simply click onto Exotic Spices under the heading of "What's Hot". Exotic Spices is the name of his new wife's exotic modeling business in L.A.

I am not sure if there are any pictures or video of him from the interview on that website though.  You really needed to see the interview.  Sorry.  I just saw it on the fly.

Hey JellyGirl,

Found some more stuff for you from that ExtraTv website.  Some photos of him hosting a calendar video at http://www.exoticspices.net  Hope this is what you were looking for.

If you look at his stats over his AL career, he hits the same whether he is in the field or plays DH.  There is no difference in his batting average whatsoever.  Last year you can't really count.  It was an aberration.  Last year, he had the worst year of his career in terms of batting average.  He has had injuries during most seasons of his career and still did much better than last year.  Not sure what the problem was last year.  Hopefully it is fixed for this season though.  What do you think?

My guess is that he'll be somewhere in between his 2000 and 2001 years if he stays healthy, which would probably translate to .265/28hrs/80rbis.  If that is his production, that will be great, especially since he seems to have the knack for game 5 back-breaking homers in the playoffs (see the last two years).  If we can get halfway decent numbers from Pena and everyone else plays at least as well as last year, I think the offense will be fine.  However, if we can add someone who really fits a need (I confess I'm not sure who that would be, besides either Stewart or Cruz jr. from Toronto which isn't going to happen), then I say add away.  Otherwise, I'd be content to play out the first month or two of the season to see what needs we have to fill.

Hey JellyGirl,

If the A's will be happy with Justice only hitting .265 with 28 Hr and 80 RBI, I am sure he could accomplish that this season.  However, this will not be enough to make up for the loss of Giambi.  I thought Beane was hoping Justice would fill Giambi's shoes offensively.  Am I wrong?  If I am, then who else will pick up the slack?

I don't think anyone is expected to fill Jason's shoes on their own. I think the Justice addition was more to increase our outfield/DH offensive production than to offset Jason's departure, per se.  The offense will hopefully be more balanced in production throughout the line-up.  By having Dye for a full year, more production from the 3rd outfield spot (i.e. Damon's spot)/DH spot, and a slight improvement from Chavez, Tejada and Long (more consistancy), the A's should be able to make up for Giambi's production across the board. Adding veterans like Velarde and Hatteberg off the bench, even with mediocre numbers from Pena, we should be fine. After all, the staff ERA was under 4, so we don't have to be an offensive juggernaut to win a lot of games.

Hey JellyGirl,

You asked me how Justice looked on that Extra interview.  To me, he looked whipped.  As if he had totally lost his self-confidence.  I dunno.  Maybe he has had trouble mastering the new strike zone.  What do you think?  I hope he is at least working out or something during the off season after last year's .241 which was pathetic for him, or anyone making $7 mil.  I just hope all is well.

Come on.  You really are going to judge someone's playing level on how they looked in a tabloid interview about his fiancee/wife whatever?  Randy Johnson isn't much to look at off the field either, and no one would believe that David Wells was an athlete,  until these guys get on the field.  Justice looked awful through most of the playoffs, so if you want to base predictions on that, I'd say you have a valid point. But to base his abilities on a non-baseball related interview is silly, I think.

Hey JellyGirl,

Since as Yogi Berra has said that 50% of this game of baseball is 90% mental (I know that is a contradiction in terms, but he said it not me), someone's apparent mental state is key to me to how they are gonna play.  Also, it is curious that this appears to be the only interview he has done since he set a World Series record for consecutive strikeouts (ouch!), so what else do we as fans have to go by?  Granted a sports oriented interview would have been more revealing, but he chose to go the show biz route to present himself to the public and his fans since his World Series fiasco.  His choice of an entertainment setting as opposed to a serious sports setting to do his first interview since bombing out in the World Series, is telling in itself, don't you think?  Why has he turned down all the sportscasters?  I am sure has been asked.  What is he hiding?  Maybe he doesn't want to talk about his persistent groin injuries of the past 2 seasons that don't appear to be going away.  Maybe it is more serious than just a groin tear.  Yes, at least one New York paper reported it as a tear at the time, which is a lot more serious than just a strain.  Maybe his double hernia operation of a year ago had lead to complications because maybe he came back too soon.  I don't know.  A lot of veteran players are having trouble with the new strike zone.  Maybe he doesn't want to answer questions about this either.  I wish you had seen the interview, too, because it is hard to describe something to someone who hasn't seen it. Yes, I wish we had more information, but that is not my fault that he has refused to do sports interviews since the World Series.  You know he has been asked!

Perhaps, and you may well be right.  However, I am operating under the assumption that Dave Justice isn't a huge name anymore, and that that is why he hasn't had many interviews.  I sort of viewed his trade to OAK as an afterthought news-wise (except for us A's fans).  I could be wrong about this, but my impression is that Justice's "newsworthiness" right now ranks right up there with Chuck Knoblauch's (i.e., they were news when they were in NY, but aren't really on the radar in OAK and KC).  Again, I could be wrong and he could be in bad shape, but we won't know until spring anyway.  60 days and counting!!!
