Ryan was the star on a low-profile team that fielded some bad ballclubs during his prime.

It would have been interesting to see him play with the Big Red Machine during those days. I'm guessing there would have been more economical pitching, fewer individual accomplishments, and more wins with their offense and Johnny Bench calling his games.

Tanana's best years were 1975-77. Ryan's best years were 1972-74.

Gene Autry left his "baseball people" to run the team; he rarely, if ever, stepped in to countermand anything they did, including letting Ryan go.
Having said that, I still wouldn't want a Texas Ranger as my hometown hero. . . .gotta be Tim Salmon.

It is impossible for anyone who has been a long time Angel to not consider Nolan Ryan one of the top 5 Angels of all time. Fregosi is also on the list. (Abbott and Carew should be replaced. Both Nolan and Fregosi's numbers retired by the team and both had major impacts on true fans coming to the games and buidling some kind of respect during very bad years when no one respected this team. Many comments on this board about Nolan dishing the Angels. Well, let me tell you, I have been an Angel fan since 1962, grew up going to Spring Training in Palm Springs and there were plenty of times the Angels deserved criticsim. Any long time fan has certainly been critical of this organization and rightfully so, why not the best player ever being critical. I hated it when Noaln went in the HOF as a Ranger. But, the Angels caused this problem. Nolan loved this team, named his first kid after Jimmy Reese, and would have stayed here, but Buzzi wouldn't let that happen. I have no idea what Nolan did for this community from a charitable basis and expect many of you who have been critical of that part of him don't know either. No Nolan on this list of five is the as hurtful as Dave Henderson's HR and our collapse against the Mariners. Actually with his name absent, the entire thing is a joke.
